very interesting web site on Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC)
Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) are a category of diarrhoea-causing E. coli. Strains that belong to this category produce a characteristic "stacked-brick" or aggregative pattern of adherence on human epithelial cells and solid supports. Other types of E. coli isolated from clinical cases exhibit a localized or diffuse pattern of adherence. EAEC can cause persistent as well as acute diarrhoeal-illness. They can produce watery or inflammatory diarrhoea and yet, some people colonised with EAEC strains show no symptoms. The rationale for this variation, as well as the pathogenesis of this organism is yet to be fully understood but it is currently the subject of investigation in several laboratories.
