Curriculum:
After passing a postdoctoral stage at the Laboratory of Hospital Infection, CPHL-London for a year, I started the research in epidemiology of infectious diseases and the use of molecular epidemiological markers for outbreak control. The combinations of phenotypical and genotypical microbial makers are extremely useful for the detection of outbreaks of infectious agents. In 1994 the Salmonella research laboratory started its activity at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of the Basque Country in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. From that time, we had had cooperative projects with colleagues from our own country and from Denmark, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and the United States of America. The techniques used at the projects were ribotyping, REA, PFGE, RAPD and PCR. Recently, we open our research to genomics, bioinformatics and the molecular diagnosis of Salmonella, using RNA and DNA detection, hybridization, microarrays, Real Time PCR, fluorescent probes, and bioinformatic tools (http://insilico.ehu.es/). I belong to the Epidemiological Markers Study Group at the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, The Spanish Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, The Spanish Society for Microbiology, and I am member of the Editorial board of the journal Molecular and Cellular Probes. As we are a university based research laboratory our focus is science and student skills development. Besides of an intensive pregraduate teaching, we run a postgraduate course in Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases, direct several Ph.D. Thesis, and receive Erasmus students from abroad. We are interested in collaborative research projects with academic or other institutions of the Mediterranean area in Salmonella subject and other enteropathogens.
